Preloading outrigger springs ensures longer life and optimum performance. Insufficient preload will reduce the performance and life of the spring.

Stacking of outrigger springs is possible only if the springs are guided. Paired springs are an option provided the springs are not in contact. The larger the conductor, the longer the lifespan. It is essential to always guide springs with a free length to diameter (L0 / DH) ratio greater than 3.5.

With outrigger springs in the temperature range of 248 to 482 ° F (120 to 250 ° C), consider a loss between 1 and 2% of load every 104 ° F (40 ° C).

Pre-loading the outrigger springs to at least 5% of the free length is strongly recommended.

There are three types of outrigger springs:
  • ISO outrigger springs
  • JIS outrigger springs
  • US / NAMES stamping springs (ST springs)
